Animal Welfare Statement

Our Philosophy

At Idaho Golden Retriever Rescue (IDGRR), we believe every Golden Retriever deserves a life filled with love, safety, and dignity. Our animal welfare practices are rooted in compassion, science-based care, and a deep respect for the bond between humans and animals.

We are committed to the highest standards of animal welfare in every aspect of our rescue operations — from intake and medical care to foster placement and permanent adoption.

Rescue & Intake Standards

Every dog that comes into our program receives:

• A comprehensive veterinary examination within 48 hours of intake
• Age-appropriate vaccinations and parasite prevention
• Spay or neuter surgery (if not already done)
• Microchipping for permanent identification
• Behavioral assessment to understand temperament and needs

We accept dogs regardless of age, health status, or behavioral challenges. No Golden Retriever in need is turned away if we have the capacity to help.

Medical Care

We provide complete medical care for every dog in our program, including:

• Dental cleanings and extractions when needed
• Treatment for heartworm, tick-borne diseases, and other conditions
• Orthopedic surgery for injuries or congenital conditions
• Ongoing management of chronic conditions such as allergies, thyroid disorders, or diabetes
• Palliative and hospice care for dogs with terminal diagnoses

Our veterinary partners share our commitment to treating every dog as if they were our own.

Foster Care Program

Our foster-based model ensures every dog lives in a home environment — never a kennel or shelter. Foster families provide:

• A safe, loving home environment during the transition period
• Daily exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation
• Observation and reporting on behavior, health, and temperament
• Patience and understanding as dogs adjust to home life

All foster families are carefully screened, trained, and supported by our team throughout the foster period.

Adoption Standards

We take our adoption process seriously to ensure the best possible match between dog and family. Our standards include:

• Thorough application review and reference checks
• Home environment assessment
• Meet-and-greet sessions with the dog
• Post-adoption follow-up and support
• Lifetime return policy — we will always take back a dog we placed

We never adopt dogs to be used as guard dogs, breeders, or for any purpose inconsistent with companion animal welfare.

Humane Treatment Policy

IDGRR strictly prohibits:

• The use of aversive training methods, including shock collars, prong collars, or physical punishment
• Tethering or chaining dogs as a primary means of containment
• Leaving dogs outdoors without adequate shelter, food, and water
• Any form of neglect, abuse, or exploitation

We advocate for positive reinforcement training methods and provide resources to adopters and foster families on humane, effective training techniques.

End-of-Life Care

When a dog in our care faces a terminal diagnosis or declining quality of life, we approach end-of-life decisions with the utmost compassion and veterinary guidance. We believe in:

• Prioritizing the dog's comfort and quality of life above all else
• Making humane euthanasia decisions based on veterinary recommendation when suffering cannot be alleviated
• Ensuring no dog passes alone — a caring volunteer or foster is always present
• Honoring every dog's life through our memorial program

Community Education

We believe animal welfare extends beyond our rescue operations. IDGRR is committed to educating our community about:

• Responsible pet ownership and the importance of spaying/neutering
• Recognizing and reporting animal abuse or neglect
• The benefits of adopting rescue animals
• Breed-specific health awareness for Golden Retrievers
• Supporting local and national animal welfare legislation

Animal cruelty is a crime in Idaho. We encourage everyone to be an advocate for animals who cannot speak for themselves.

Our Pledge

Idaho Golden Retriever Rescue pledges to uphold the highest standards of animal welfare in everything we do. We are accountable to the dogs in our care, our volunteers and foster families, our adopters, and our community.
